Can you dive on 100% oxygen?

The answer to this is yes, but it can be dangerous in certain situations. It’s not usual in recreational diving to dive on 100% oxygen, although there are some professional divers who do. Even then, it’s only something they’d do for a short space of time.

if you’re sensitive to hyperoxia or experience an adverse reaction that inhibits your ability to breath or move normally when exposed to high concentrations of oxygen at higher than atmospheric pressures (scuba diving depths) then naturally you should not be considering diving on 100% oxygen.

Does oxygen become poisonous at greater depths and levels of pressure?

Oxygen becomes poisonous (or toxifying) when diving deeper and for longer periods of time. It’s also the same as saying can you breathe 100% pure oxygen safely at 2-3m depth?

Ideally no, but if you’re suffering CO2 retention/hypercapnia then it’s possible that breathing 100% pure oxygen may relieve some of your symptoms temporarily.

If you can get to shallower depths then do so, because breathing 100% oxygen causes acute pulmonary toxicity over time which means one could experience convulsions or seizures after many hours underwater on helium-oxygen mixtures.


Can you breathe air underwater with 100% O2 at a depth of several meters/feet in a swimming pool, pond, lake or sea without too much stress and negative effects?

Yes you can but only for short periods of time (3-5 minutes) before experiencing convulsions from hyperoxia exposure.


Can diving on pure oxygen affect your health when used as a treatment in medical emergencies such as carbon monoxide poisoning?

If a person suffers CO2 retention due to lack of ventilation then breathing pure 100% oxygen will saturate more of the hemoglobin with oxygen and more of the CO2 will be released from their blood and tissues before they breathe more of a gas mixture.
