So you’re looking to go diving in Alabama… Where do you start?

Well, first I’d recommend you have a look at Alabama diving laws before doing anything! After that though, you’re actually surprisingly spoilt for choice when it comes to finding somewhere to take a dip.

Here are ten of the best places to go scuba diving if you live in Alabama. From beginners spots to challenge deep-dives for experts and experienced hobbyists, I’ve tried to go as broad as possible with what are easily my ten favourite spots in this beautiful state!


1. Dive Land Park, Diveland

Address: 401 Webster Chapel Road, Glencoe, AL 35905

This site is perfect for professional divers as well as people who just want a nice day out. This shore accessible freshwater dive site has a maximum depth of 141-150ft and is home to lots of sea life. It has air fills and rental gear available, as well as camping spots, bathrooms and entertainment.

But the best part about this site is their scheduled night dives. It gives you the chance to witness the underwater world at night in a safe way.


2. Alabama Blue Water Park (Pelham Quarry)

Address: 100 Industrial Park Drive, Pelham, AL 35124

This freshwater dive site is shore accessible and features platforms and areas for training. With the opportunity to see an array of aquatic life. An onsite shop gives you the opportunity to purchase equipment from a variety of brands.

Bathrooms, changing rooms and air fills are also available to use. With a maximum depth of 131-140ft this site offers plenty of opportunity to have a great dive. 


3. Fairfield New Venture

Address: Orange Beach, AL 36561

This site is different to the rest on this list as it is a 250ft research vessel. This vessel sunk in 2018 and has since given divers a unique diving experience.

The maximum depth is 121-130ft so, it is more suited to the more advanced divers. As time progresses more sea life is being spotted at this site. 


4. Wallace Reef 

Address: Orange Beach, AL 36561

Unlike some this saltwater site is boat accessible. It has a maximum depth of 91-100ft. This site has good visibility giving you the opportunity to see an array of sea life whilst you’re diving. 


5. Alabama Point Jetties

Address: Alabama Point, Gulf Road, Orange Beach, AL 36561

This site is perfect for beginners as the maximum depth is 21-25ft. It is a shore accessible saltwater dive site which is home to an array of sea life which you have a fair chance of seeing. This site also offers free parking a short walk away. Great if you want a cheap day of diving. 


6. US Space and Rocket centre 

Address: 1 Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL 35805

This place is also perfect for diving beginners as the maximum depth is 21-25ft and all equipment is provided for you. As part of the session, you get to learn the basic scuba safety skills that you will need to advance onto bigger dives.

It is a shore access freshwater dive site which is a great feature that can help you get used to what other dive sites are like when you feel ready to advance to them.


7. Perdido Pass

Address: Perdido Beach Blvd, Orange Beach, AL

This shore accessible saltwater dive site has a maximum depth of 26-30ft so, shallow enough for beginner divers to try it out. This sandy site may give you the opportunity to see some sea life.


8. North Alabama Diving Centre 

Address: 1704 B 2nd Ave SW, Cullman, AL 35055

This diving centre is perfect for all ages and offers a variety of courses for all diving abilities. You can also purchase equipment here, as well as this you can get your equipment serviced to make sure it is in perfect condition for all your future dives. The maximum training depth is 130ft. 


9. Coffee Grinder Quarry 

Address: Princeville, AL

This shore access site comprises of clay and dirt. This place is great spot for more experienced divers to practice and have a quick dive with a slight chance of seeing some sea life. 


10. Poseiden’s Playground 

Address: Orange Beach, AL 36561

First-time divers will love this place but it’s not going to be challenging for the more experienced diver. With a maximum depth of 36-40ft and the addition of navigation lines in recent years, this site is safer for new divers. There is also a chance you could see some sea life!
